Nordic webinar on student’s projects – GI Norden

Preliminary program

02.00 (GMT+1): Welcome to the GI Norden webinar.

02.05 – 03.50: A program on student’s projects in relation to geodata is being elaborated

02.05: Visualizing flood disasters of the Global South. Ohto Nygren, University of Turku, Finland
By automating a global geospatial data set analysis I will be visualizing flood disasters in the cities of the Global South. Flooding is the most devastating natural hazard affecting tens of millions of people yearly and causing billions of USD dollars in damages globally. The people most affected by flooding globally are those with a high level of everyday vulnerability and limited resources for flood protection and recovery. Geospatial data from the Global South is severely lacking, and geospatial proficiency needs to be improved at a local level so that geospatial data and data analysis can be efficiently utilized in disaster risk reduction schemes and urban planning in the Global South.

02.45: Estimating the GIS potential of Local Water Retention solutions for roof runoff. Mads Peter Hornstrup Hansen and Louis Tonn-Petersen, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
With the more frequent and stronger cloudburst due to climate change, cities become more vulnerable and less resilient to these events. This can cause pressure on the sewage system, thus making it less functional in some areas. Urbanized areas pose a bigger risk due to the potential runoff of water as it can, generally, not retain it with the predominant asphalt paved surfaces. Cities such as Copenhagen have been researching methods to reduce the impact of such events on the city. Copenhagen has had very big economical damage with the summer cloudburst of 2011 and 2014. By segmenting and classifying roof faces of building polygons, we urge to delimit and analyze the areas near the roof face. Thereby, many parameters may be estimated and used to uncover the potential for establishing Local Water Retention solutions.
